Criteria for Participation
In order for a driver to be considered a candidate for financial support from the St. Christopher’s Fund, they must first meet certain criteria. After the criteria have been met, SCF may be able to assist drivers in a variety of capacities.
- Must hold a commercial driver’s license
- Driving a commercial vehicle must be primary source of income (or was before the medical problem caused a loss of work)
- Must have a significant medical problem that requires monetary assistance:
- Medical information must be able to be confirmed by medical examination or via contact with your physician
- Must be able to provide proof of needing financial assistance
Drivers that meet these criteria are eligible for assistance. Assistance is provided on a funds-available basis. The St. Christopher fund may assist in the following ways:
- Negotiating reduced prices for medical care
- Assisting with rehabilitation and follow-up
- Providing financial aid during the recovery period
- If driver cannot be rehabilitated, assistance obtaining social security disability
- Assisting a former driver in getting SSI and disability.
- Jump starting a retraining program to for drivers who can work but can not pass a DOT exam following a catastrophic illness.
- Consider helping the children of critically ill drivers with scholarship assistance similar to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation and the McElligott Family Foundation.
